ABOUT US

OUR STORY
Founded in 1971 by three passionate model aviation enthusiasts, the Hub City Radio Control Club (HCRCC) has proudly served the Saskatoon community for more than five decades. Since the beginning, our mission has been simple: to promote and support the exciting hobby and sport of radio control model aviation in and around Saskatoon.
Today, our club includes approximately 100 members of all ages and backgrounds who share a common passion for flight. Members enjoy flying at one of Canada’s premier model aviation facilities, operating a wide range of aircraft including electric, gas, glow, and turbine-powered models. Our flying disciplines include aerobatics and 3D flying, pylon racing, scale aircraft, helicopters, multi-rotors (drones), combat flying, control line aircraft, and rockets.
HCRCC is home to many of Canada’s accomplished model aviators and hobby leaders. Our membership has included a past president of the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada (MAAC), several MAAC board members, Team Canada competitors in World Championship events, and multiple Canadian champions across various flying disciplines. In 2024, we were proud to host the MAAC Annual Meeting at our flying site, earning outstanding feedback for both our hospitality and our world-class facilities.
Over the years, our club has hosted numerous major aviation events, including Prairie Pylon Racing Association competitions, a Canadian Pylon Racing Championship, and numerous Pattern and Western Canadian IMAC Aerobatic Championships, plus heli rallies. One of our members also founded a company that helped pioneer advanced drone technology now recognized internationally, with one of its drones displayed in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s permanent collection.
Beyond providing exceptional flying facilities, HCRCC is committed to building a welcoming and supportive aviation community. We offer free beginner flight instruction, mentorship programs, fun-fly events, jet and large-scale rallies, racing competitions, aerobatic contests, and our annual two-day Model Air Show that introduces the public to the hobby and inspires future pilots.
Our structured “Wings Program” helps pilots progress safely through all skill levels:
A-Wings: Solo flight certification
B-Wings: Intermediate pilot proficiency
C-Wings: Advanced pilot qualification and air show eligibility
Members who achieve the two higher certification levels may also become club instructors and mentors.
The history of our flying sites reflects the dedication and volunteer spirit of our members. From humble beginnings at a gravel pit near Osler, to a wartime airstrip near Vanscoy, and later an excellent developed grass field south of Saskatoon, the club has continually evolved and grown. In 2015, after losing access to our long-time flying location, the club faced another major transition.
That challenge led to an extraordinary opportunity thanks to the generosity of Bob Richardt, our field’s namesake. Mr. Richardt donated 160 acres of land east of Saskatoon, along with a tractor shed, clubhouse, equipment, and maintenance vehicles, ensuring a permanent home for the club for generations to come.
Most importantly, HCRCC remains a friendly, inclusive, and welcoming community for anyone interested in aviation. Whether you are an experienced pilot, a beginner, or simply curious about the hobby, we invite you to visit our field, meet our members, and experience the excitement of model aviation firsthand.
If the gate is open, visitors are always welcome!

OUR FIELD
Officials at MAAC, the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada, have described our site as “one of the best in Canada”. We like to think it ranks amongst the finest in all of North America!
Richardt Field is named in honour of Bob Richardt, whose generosity and vision helped create a truly exceptional model aircraft facility. Thanks to his support, our members enjoy a purpose-built field designed specifically for the hobby we love.
Our site features a 550-foot asphalt runway, suitable for turbine jets, alongside two meticulously maintained, multi-directional, irrigated grass runways, providing ideal conditions for all types of remotely piloted aircraft. The clubhouse serves as the heart of our operations, hosting monthly meetings, contest and airshow concessions, and a gathering place for our members.
A spacious grass infield offers the perfect vantage point for spectators – just bring a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy the flying. We also have a covered seating area with picnic tables for added comfort. With a gravel parking area for more than 200 vehicles, we’re well equipped to host the large crowds that attend our annual airshow. For visiting pilots and enthusiasts, we offer a convenient RV parking area, welcoming guests from across Canada and beyond.
You’ll find us at 41 Valley View Road, just 12 minutes east of Saskatoon along Highway 5 toward Humboldt.

OUR ACTIVITIES
Most evenings and weekends, you’ll find club members at Richardt Field enjoying every aspect of model aviation. From fixed-wing aircraft to drones, the sky is rarely quiet. We also regularly host school groups, introducing students to science and engineering through hands-on model rocket activities.
Training and mentorship are at the core of what we do. Our weekly flight training sessions help new members build confidence and skills, and we dedicate two evenings each week to developing the next generation of drone and fixed-wing model aviators. Whether you’re brand new or returning to the hobby, there’s always someone ready to help you get airborne.
For those drawn to competition, the field is a place of constant practice and refinement. Skilled pilots work through precise aerobatic routines, fine-tuning speed, timing, and angles with every flight. Others take to the course for the thrill of racing, where tight turns, high speeds, and side-by-side competition make for an exhilarating experience both in the air and from the sidelines.
Each year, our club proudly hosts our model airplane airshow, now a must-see event in Saskatoon. Hundreds of spectators come out to watch and experience the full range of model aviation. From detailed scale models and precision aerobatics to drone demonstrations, control line flying, and model rockets, there’s something to captivate visitors of all ages.
